From Ballerina to America’s First Professional Female Winemaker, Katherine Vajda: Winemaker at Concannon Vineyard (1950-1960)
As we celebrate our 128th consecutive year producing wine under the Concannon family label, I am reminded of the remarkable Katherine Vajda, our winemaker from 1950 to 1960.
Katherine was the first technically-trained, professional woman winemaker in the United States. Highly respected for her knowledge, skill and training, she served as an active participant on the Technical Advisory Board of the California Wine Institute.

The best way to predict the future is to invent it
I’m often asked to describe our family’s philosophy on viticulture and enology. Simply put, it’s “Tradition with Innovation.” While we utilize the most current techniques and technology, our daily practices remain consistent with those practiced by my great-grandfather in 1883. I think this is the main reason why our wines have been trusted on other families’ tables for 128 years. Continue reading

A Hero, A Mentor, A Father…A Class Act
The number 50 is being celebrated all year long around the winery. It’s our 50th Anniversary as America’s First Petite Sirah ever since my father, James Concannon, first produced this varietal in 1961. Coincidentally, 1961 is also the year I was born. Continue reading

“It’s a grand old flag and a high-flying flag”

In remembrance of Flag Day last week, I wanted to share some of our family’s military history and traditions with you.
In 1939, as the Great Depression was ending and World War II was looming, my grandfather, Joseph Concannon Sr., had a regulation 100-foot flagpole built in front of our family’s home at the entrance to the winery. Livermore was a small town at that time, and he made the dedication of the flag pole very special: a detachment of service men were present for the dedication, as well as a band, and the entire town was invited to the reception following the ceremony.
