Experience the Beautiful Livermore Valley:
The Livermore Valley is not only celebrated as one of the oldest wine regions in California, but also is recognized for its pivotal role and visionary leadership in introducing and planting a diverse grape varietal mix with varietals from France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
In 1882, vineyard growth exploded in the region when Charles Wetmore, Secretary of the California Viticultural Commission, opened his Cresta Blanca Winery in Livermore. Recognizing its gravelly soil and Mediterranean climate as amazingly similar to Bordeaux , Wetmore imported and planted vines directly from Bordeaux … and then stunned the entire world in 1889 at the International Paris Exposition with his wine winning the Grand Prix, thus becoming the first California wine to win a competition in France!
In 1883, another viticulture pioneer, James Concannon, also purchased prime acreage in Livermore and established Concannon Vineyard—a winery which has since become a legendary trailblazer in the California wine industry.
Today, Livermore is a vibrant community full of charm, culture and natural beauty. Described nicely by our Chamber, “We have over 40 wineries which offer an exceptional array of events, concerts and tastings throughout the year. After an afternoon of wine tasting, visit our historic downtown and enjoy shopping, dining, spa services, and live music at one of our fun nightspots. Our 500 seat Bankhead Theater brings in local and traveling performances including local opera and symphony. Livermore also boasts beautiful parks and hiking trails…along with many unique facilities and programs. During the summer months you cannot miss the world fastest rodeo, and the Wine Country Festival.”
Just 45 minutes from San Francisco and 20 minutes from Oakland, the Livermore Valley is the closest and oldest premier wine region to these nearby cities.
