If you are looking to discover your inner vintner, then this is your tour of duty. So roll up your sleeves, get ready to get dirty and plunge into the world of winegrowing. At each Sommelier Boot Camp session, you will learn how to round out your knowledge and expand your palate. This Boot Camp is the most fun you can have while learning all about the journey from grape to glass.
Boot Camp #1
Basic Training: Bud Break | March 24, 2018
It’s bud break time in the Livermore Valley, the first stage of the vine cycle that yields grapes each fall. Like the smell of coffee and sizzling bacon, rainwater and sunlight gently wake the grapevines. Start from the beginning, as each guest is assigned their own CORDON (vine) to work on and nurture all growing season. Ten-Hut Soldier: Shoot Pruning | May 12, 2018
There’s a lot more behind that perfect glass of wine than planting and harvesting grapes. The proof is in the pruning. “If you don’t prune with care, vines will grow out of control and eventually become unbalanced,” says Vineyard Manager Paul Buwalda, who will join this session to take you through the steps of pruning and telling us why this step in the cycle is crucial to that perfect glass we all seek. Let’s Get Dirty: Leaf & Cluster Thinning | July 14, 2018
Leaf pulling and cluster thinning are practices we do at Concannon Vineyard each year. It’s fun to expose the cluster and see what we have! It’s like opening up a gift, revealing the grapes hidden by the leaves. This camp puts the fate of your CORDON into your own hands. Advanced Training: Veraison & Irrigation | August 11, 2018
Timing is everything when fine tuning grape irrigation. Sustainable practices include using extreme efficiency in our irrigation methods, which saves water while improving vine quality. This camp will show the importance our irrigation practices and the stages of veraison during this critical time in the vine cycle. Earn Your Stripes: Harvest & Graduation | September 8, 2018
Enjoy the fruits of your labor in the last session! You’ll taste grapes from the vines, test sugar levels and learn about the harvest process. You’ll taste Sommelier selected wine and food pairings that will indulge your senses in a collection of culinary experiences designed to showcase the dynamic relationship between food and wine and truly celebrate the culmination of your Sommelier Boot Camp experience. You’ve earned your stripes—and your 6 bottles of wine to take home and enjoy!
Pricing includes all 5 sessions + 6 bottles of wine.
Sessions are on Saturdays.
Session 1: 9-11am; Session 2: 1-3pm (Guests must attend session time that they purchased.)
